"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" were the words said by Neil Armstrong when he stepped foot on the Moon on July 21, 1969. Neil Armstrong and his crew were the first humans to step foot on an object in space other than the Earth. This event was the result of much hard work by N.A.S.A.'s ( the United States' Space Exploration Organization), Apollo mission that was aiming to get to the moon since its start in 1958. There were 11 total Apollo flights. Read more about the Apollo program here.
Space was the final frontier for Americans who always enjoyed exploration. The word frontier means areas that have not been discovered yet. During the 1800's, many Americans risked their lives to discover the West. States like Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and California were all discovered by courageous explorers during the 1800's. However, after 1900, all of America had been discovered and settled. It was time for a new frontier. Americans made that new and final frontier Outer Space.
Since the landing on the moon in 1969, N.A.S.A. has sent rovers to the Moon and Mars, has orbited the sun and the planets Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter, and has flown by the planets Uranus and Neptune. Enjoy the videos and resources about space exploration!
